About Food For Neighbors
Food For Neighbors is a fast-growing, community-powered nonprofit working to end child hunger in Northern Virginia and beyond. Through their unique Red Bag Program and school partnerships, they provide consistent and reliable food support to middle and high school students who might otherwise go hungry during weekends and school breaks. With the support of thousands of volunteers, donors, businesses and schools, they are making a tangible difference in the lives of teens.

 

Since its founding in 2016, Food For Neighbors has grown from a small group of volunteers supporting Herndon Middle and High Schools to a community-wide effort that now serves over 8,700 students across 53 schools in Fairfax, Loudoun, and Arlington counties. Outcomes and Success:

 

●        Student Reach: Expanded from supporting 100 students in 2016 to over 8,700 students in 2025.

●        School Partnerships: Increased from 2 initial schools to 53 partnering middle and high schools.

●        Community Engagement: Currently mobilizing 3,300 households and 4,200 volunteers to donate and distribute over 140,000+ pounds of food and toiletries yearly.

●        Financial Impact: Donated over $1.5 million in resources, including $450,000 in food, toiletries, and grocery gift cards in FY 2024 alone.

●        Recognition: Honored as Fairfax County Public Schools Ignite partner, Best of Arlington 2023, Volunteer Fairfax’s Volunteer Program of the Year 2024, and officially commended by the Virginia General Assembly.

Overall Objective

 

Food For Neighbors seeks  a mission-driven, strategic, and detail-oriented Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join their leadership team. The COO will serve as the organization’s operational leader, responsible for implementing the vision of the Founder & Executive Director through effective team management, program delivery, and organizational systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to scale impact and deepen their presence in the communities they serve.

 

Serving as a strategic partner with the Founder, this is an opportunity to be on the front-lines of this rapidly growing organization.

 

Position Overview

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for executing the organization’s mission through effective internal management and operational leadership. The COO oversees all programmatic, financial, and logistical operations, ensuring Food For Neighbors delivers high-quality service, maintains compliance, and scales its impact sustainably. This role translates vision into action.

Scope Of Responsibility

Reporting to the Founder and Executive Director, the Chief Operating Officer has direct supervision of four professionals: Directors of Programs, Finance, Technology and School Partnerships encompassing 12 employees, which is 60% of the organization.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership

·         Leads the day-to-day operations of Food For Neighbors, including program execution, logistics, and service delivery.

·         Supervises regional program leads and ensures consistent, high-quality food collection and distribution in partnership with local schools.

·         Oversees inventory management, transportation logistics, and volunteer coordination systems.

·         Oversees program implementation including programs, events, school engagement, and Red Bag logistics.

·         Supervises operational systems and ensures the effectiveness of service delivery across regions.

 

Team Management

·         Manages a team of Directors overseeing Programs, Finance, Technology, and School Partnerships.

·         Fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

·         Staff Development – weekly touch-base meetings with Directors and talent development within the organization.

·         Leads hiring, training, and team development to support a healthy and high-performing staff culture.

 

Financial & Administrative Oversight

·         Collaborates with the Finance Director on annual budgeting, financial tracking, audits, and compliance.

·         Ensures all operational practices comply with nonprofit governance, legal, and ethical standards.

 

Technology & Infrastructure

·         Oversees organizational tools and platforms, including Salesforce and other operational technologies.

·         Ensures data-driven decision-making and streamlined communication systems.

·         Collaborates with the Director of Technology to ensure the organization is using the best software, programs and tools for efficiency and high-quality performance.

 

Cross-Functional Collaboration

·         Partners closely with the Executive Director to implement strategic priorities and organizational goals.

·         Ensures internal coordination with fundraising and communications for aligned messaging and resource needs.

 

Qualifications

·         7+ years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit operations, program management, or a related leadership role.

·         Proven success managing complex teams and multi-departmental functions.

·         Strong background in management, coordinating programs, systems building, and process improvement.

·         Experience with budgeting, financial oversight, and nonprofit compliance.

·         Experience with Salesforce, plus comfort with Mailchimp, DonorBox, Zapier, Google.

·         Excellent leadership, communication, and people management skills.

·         Passion for youth, education, and addressing food insecurity

Work Environment & Schedule
·         This is a full-time role with a hybrid schedule. Some in-person meetings and events are required, primarily in Northern Virginia.

·         Occasional evenings and weekends may be required for meetings or community events.

 

Education

 

A bachelor’s degree in business is preferred
