Peace Corps Campus Ambassador Q&A Responses

Peace Corps Campus Ambassador Program
Q&A Responses from Peace Corps

Campus Ambassadors are RPCVs in graduate school who act as local points of contacts for other students, faculty, and campus groups to share out information about Peace Corps and its benefits. This is a great way to get experience while in school plus you’ll receive $1,600 per semester when you commit for the full academic year! That’s $3,200 total!

To get your started, we had a brief conversation with Peace Corps about the ins and outs of the program based on questions we received from the community. Here’s what we learned:

  • Is this a new program?
This is not a new program. It was on pause a few years ago but there were active Campus Ambassadors (CAs) this previous academic year on over 30 campuses.
  • What kinds of activities are expected of Campus Ambassadors? Is there a list of what recruiters have done/best practices?
There is some information on the website (Peace Corps – Peace Corps Campus Ambassadors) about this but the core activities include: posting flyers, outreach to clubs, generating contacts that might be interested with the Peace Corps (leads), and posting on social media.
  • Can Volunteers apply even if they haven’t started school?
Yes – Per the website, the opportunity is open to any student pursuing skills training, professional certificate, associate, undergraduate, and/or graduate degrees at any accredited college or university in the U.S. As long as you are enrolled when the position starts.
  • Can I apply if I am / am not a Coverdell Fellows?
    Absolutely – all are welcome!
  • Are there healthcare benefits? Or other benefits?
Since this is not a full-time position, there are no additional benefits other than the stipend.
  • Will this provide / lead into an inside track for a job at Peace Corps?
Applicants to open Peace Corps staff positions will be evaluated on the full range of their background and skills. Although certainly no commitments can be made, it does seem plausible that being a Campus Ambassador could help make someone a more competitive candidate.RPCVnexus Tip –> Yes this will help as you’ll become more familiar with how Peace Corps HQ works. Plus, you’ll have more opportunities to potentially interact with Peace Corps Staff and Recruiters. Use this time to ask questions and gain the knowledge needed for the position you’re interested in at Peace Corps HQ!
  • For making social media posts, will I need to do that on my own personal account, the schools, or another one?
Individuals post on their personal social media accounts.RPCVnexus tip –> While you’ll post from your account, you could find ways to work with the school’s social media or communications team to help amplify your post.
